I was fascinated by the possibilities of VMware from the release of its first beta versions back then in 1998. Since I was always using different operating systems and also often wanted to use different configurations of one operating system, work got much easier for me after that time.

There were many improvements in this area since then - many different technologies like hardware virtualization, paravirtualization, jails, zones and virtual services allow virtualization on different levels. These technologies resulted in even more products, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
